What To Wear For Your First Dance Lesson

What To Wear For Your First Dance Lesson

Ready for your first dance lesson?

If you are like most of us when we first get started in ballroom we wonder what the heck to wear for our first dance lesson. A good rule of thumb is that dance attire should be casual and comfortable.

We’ve had first-time students call in and cancel their lesson because they have no idea what to wear, including shoes.

Don’t let this be you. Join us on the dance floor as we give some tips on what attire to wear.

Our instructions are here to help you learn to dance and support you in having fun in the learning process.

Women’s Attire

Hey ladies, this is your time to just be you. What is appropriate attire in the ballroom studio?

  1. Choose clothing that allows for movement. Recommend NOT wearing a pencil skirt.
  2. Business casual attire, if you are coming straight from work, is great.
  3. Yoga Pants and T-shirt work also.

Keep in mind that you will be moving backward and forwards so you want clothing that allows for this movement. Dresses or skirts that are too short can also be a distraction if you are likely to worry about them rising too high as you dance.

As for shoes, walk into the studio with shoes that are comfortable to dance in. Also, make sure the shoe is secure on the foot. Loose shoes might throw off your balance or even cause you to sprain an ankle and we don’t want that now do we?

Recommend leaving the sneakers at home, as they have a tendency to grip the dance floor making it a bit more difficult for spins and turns. Shoes with a leather or suede sole are best if you have them.

For a beginner you don’t have to invest in a ballroom dance shoe just yet… and if it is something you want to buy, just ask one of the instructors in the studio, they have some great recommendations for shoes.

Men’s Attire

Hello gentlemen, you’ve got it pretty easy on what to wear to your first lesson.

  1. Business casual is the preferred attire. Shirt and dress pants.
  2. It’s Florida… you can come in wearing shorts and a t-shirt
  3. Jeans and shirt are acceptable also.

The same guideline applies to you, wear clothing that is comfortable and allows for movement.

As for shoes, well let’s be honest, we’ve seen you come in wearing dress shoes, sneakers, sandals, and cowboy boots. There are a few fewer turns for the gentleman to dance so as a beginner wear what you are comfortable dancing in. Please, no flip-flops. Ideally, dress shoes are best.

At the end of the day, is all about you being comfortable in what you are wearing. Our instructors are here to help you learn to dance. If you have questions about what to wear as you progress in your future lesson all you have to do is ask.

Arthur Murray Clermont wants you to have fun while you dance. We will teach you to dance in whatever you want to wear.

OH… almost forgot. Accessories. Keep it simple. Chucky jewelry or long necklaces can get caught while doing turns on the dance floor. Best to leave them at home or remove them when you come in for your lesson.
